Eating well during cancer treatment

Nutrition during treatment is not about a strict diet — it is about giving your body what it needs to cope. Practical, non-fad guidance.

Why nutrition matters

Cancer treatment places extra demands on the body. Adequate protein, fluids and energy help you tolerate treatment, recover between cycles and maintain strength.

Practical tips

Small, consistent habits are more useful than dramatic changes:

  • Eat small meals more often rather than three large ones
  • Prioritise protein at each meal (eggs, fish, chicken, legumes, dairy)
  • Drink fluids steadily through the day
  • Choose bland, easy-to-tolerate foods on difficult days
  • Speak to your team before starting supplements or restrictive diets

When to ask for help

Ongoing weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent nausea or a loss of appetite that does not improve should be discussed with your oncology team. A referral to a dietitian is often helpful.
