Starting chemotherapy: what to expect

A practical guide to your first cycle — what happens on the day, how to prepare, and how side effects are managed.

Before your first cycle

You will meet your oncologist to review your treatment plan, and the practice team will schedule your blood tests, imaging and cycle dates. Bring a family member or friend if you can — there is a lot of information to take in.

On treatment day

Eat a normal meal beforehand unless told otherwise, and wear comfortable clothing. Most infusions take a few hours; the nursing team will explain each medication as it is administered and check on you throughout.

Managing side effects

Common side effects — nausea, fatigue, changes in blood counts, and mouth sensitivity — are anticipated and treated proactively. Contact the practice for anything that is not improving, especially fever, uncontrolled vomiting or unusual bleeding.

  • Take anti-nausea medication as prescribed, not only when nausea starts
  • Rest when you need to, and move gently when you can
  • Stay hydrated and eat small, frequent meals
  • Protect yourself from infection during low-count days
